So honestly, why would anyone blog about the results of the first preseason game. #1 That is a great question, #2 because its me. That really should be all the answer the question requires.

Coach Phillips shakes hands with Peyton Manning after his first outing as the Cowboys head coach

Nothing can truly be determined from watching a preseason game—so I promise I did not try to over analyze the game, but I did think there were some positives and negatives to be taken from it. In not order other than how they pop in my head here were my thoughts:

- Romo looked really sharp. 10 of 11 is 10 of 11 no matter who or when you are playing. He was on the money with his throws, and anyone worreid at all about “post traumatic” anything from the bobble needs to find something else to worry about

- The Cowboys got the ball to the tightends a lot last night. That trend should continue Look for Witten and Fasano to have really good years.

- Leonard Davis, our free agent Guard pick up from Arizona, is a monster!!! He had 3 pancake blocks last night in one quarter—one that popped the helmet off of the pancaked Colt! Holy Cow!! I did not get to watch him that much on pass protection, but #21 and #24 will be running behind him a lot this year!!

- Don’t let the score fool you. The #1 defense was not the impressive. Granted they were playing the Colts starting offense. Nonetheless, in his one drive of the night Peyton Manning moved his team into our redzone effortlessly. We played decent redzone D on that series to hold them to a field goal, but don’t be overly impressed with what the final score looks like in terms of our starters on D.

- I know this is not fair disclaimer!!! Our coverage on kickoffs was awful!!! Every time we kicked off the Colts had a big return, and usually they were one block from breaking it all the way. The guys playing special teams in these games are the guys mainly trying to make it. I get that, and they have not played together long enough to be great as a unit. BUT special teams will win or lose you games. Ours had better look a lot better than that come September 9th or it will cost us 2 games this year.

- Didn’t get to really focus on what Anthony Spencer did or didn’t do, but a few palyers stood out. Matt Moore looked really solid in the 3rd QB slot. He might have just earned his way on to the team as the #3 QB. By the way—you won’t hear his name after that because he will most likely be inactive on game days, but he really looked sharp. Sam Hurd didn’t have many balls thrown his way, but he sealed off a great block late in the 3rd quarter on a Tyson Thompson running play! After last year we all know Hurd can catch—seeing him block that way could be what eventually makes him a special guy for us. Doug Free and James Marten looked pretty good actually. Hope they don’t play this year because Colombo and Adams are better when healthy—but for their debuts I thought they were solid.

Thats it for now. The Cowboys and Broncos will be practicing with each other part of this week leading up to their preseason game. Stay tuned for news should anything eventful come from that…
