I remember growing up hating the 49ers. They always won. It didn’t matter who they were playing, how much time was left, or what the score was—you just knew they were going to win. Watching them last night I think they should change the name and logo. On the bright side—we won! Cowboys 17, San Francisco 7. It wasn’t nearly that close. The Cowboys are 3 - 0 in preseason. This is the board game equivalent of landing on Free Parking in Monopoly right after somebody else has. They won the huge pot of money in the middle—you got the $50 put in there to start the new pot. Either way, 3 - 0 is much better than 0 - 3.

(Terry Glenn makes awesome TD catch #2 of the preseason)

There are a few things to keep in perspective though. 2 of those wins have come against the Saints and 49ers. Last year these teams combined to go 7 - 25. Teams don’t game plan in the preseason. They spend much more time calling plays that will allow them to evaluate the guys they need to see as opposed to calling plays to exploit the others weakness. BUT—-one thing you can’t negate is that the Cowboys are playing really good football. So good that I wish we could just call off the game against the Vikings on Thursday, and start against Jacksonville right now!

Bledsoe had another great outing. He led the team on what should have been 4 scoring drives in 4 attempts. The ‘Boys did end up with 2 TDs and one FG. The only thing that kept it from being more was a 35 yard FG attempt by Suisham sailing wide right as time expired in the 1st half. Jones and Barber both ran the ball extremely well. That and the fact Bledsoe had 0 sacks means the O line did its job very well.

The Cowboys starting D gave up 0 points—again—and played awesome. Of note, Pat Watkins started again at Free Safety with Keith Davis out after having a bullet removed from his thigh on Friday (that will keep you out). You didn’t hear his name again—and that means he did well. Anthony Henry had a pick, Newman looked solid in coverage, and front 7 was very solid. I honestly can’t wait to watch the defense play in the regular season.

For the most part—all of our starters looked good/ready last night. What I really tried to focus on while watching the game was the bubble guys. So who on the bubble did what?

Jamaica Rector made play after play last night. He ended up with 7 catches for 80 yards. Parcells also tried him as a punt returner. More on that later. Rector not only caught the ball, but he made plays when they mattered. I think he made the team.

(This guys probably earned a roster spot last night)

Sam Hurd had a quiet night as a WR. He did end up with 2 nice catches for 20 yards, but his real contribution was on Special Teams. In my mind, Parcells really wants Hurd on this team—and toward that end he wanted to give him every chance to impress. He did well on Return Coverage last night, and ended with a few tackles. I think he also made it. That leads me to:

Skyler Green. I think he lost his spot last night. You hate for your 4th round pick not to make it, but I think that is what happened. His play of the night was a cardinal sin. Green fielded a punt at the 4, and gave the Cowboys terrible field position. You always let punts past the 10 go. When Parcells let Rector start returning punts last night I think it meant he was looking at life without Green.

Montavious Stanley (6th rounder) and Kenyon Coleman are next up. I think both players are NFL guys. I just don’t think they will be Cowboys this year. Stanley could definitely be a practice squad guy if I am right, and he doesn’t make the 53 man roster. Coleman was injured (concussion I think) early in the 3rd quarter. Both guys can definitely play—its just that the guys in front of them bring a little bit more.

Shaun Suisham. The Cowboys, it looks like, are going to need a deep kicker. All of his kickoffs last night landed in the endzone, and this is very good. It may just be his saving grace. Missing a 35 yard chip shot FG after the 2 minute offense busted its hump to get the ball to the 17 yard line—lets just say Parcells looked “unhappy”. Making that kick probaly would have earned him a spot. Missing it leaves the door a little open.

I know, you all are dying to know—who are Jason’s players of the game:

Offensive honor goes to Terry Glenn. Terry Glenn is on fire right now. The ball is just sticking to him, and he is turning Cornerbacks inside out. Glenn ended the night with 4 catches for 98 yards and a TD. That was in less than a half!

Defensive Player of the Game: Bradie James. He is everywhere right now! He has definitely taken his game to another level. He ended the game with only 3 tackles, but he is just disrupting everything the opposing offense is trying to do.

Special Teams: Can you give the other team’s punter player of the game? I am going to. Tom Rouen was silly last night. To be fair, the 49ers need a great punter. They will be doing it a lot this year. He finished the night with an average of 54 yards per boot! More annoying was his ability to nail it, and then have it land and bounce out of bounds sideways inside our 5 yard line. Fortunately for us, we have Romo (who played much better than the stats say)—and the 49ers look like they only have 8 guys out on defense at a time.

One more preseason game, and we will have real football!! I am concerned about TO and his hamstring(not to mention his attitude), I am concerned that Parcells is about to call Vanderjagt “a drunk idiot kicker”(after he pulled himself out of the game in warmups), and I am hopeful Crayton’s ankle will be healthy by September 10th.

What I am more of than anything else—is ready to watch the 2006 Dallas Cowboys. This team is by far the most talented we have had in a long time! I am dying to see what all that talent does when the game count.

Post Scripts:

Vangerjagt actually said of Parcells, “He doesn’t know my groin as well as I do…” Shouldn’t this go without need of being said. If this is not the case—never mind.

TO has been fined $9500 essentially for being a jerk. He was late for a team meeting and skipped a rehab session. I hope we at least see something from him for all of the stuff we are dealing with.
